Today is National Doctors Day. It is said that doctors are the second form of God on earth. One such person to make this a reality is Jabalpur’s doctor (captain) MC Davar. At the age of 76, he has been treating patients for the last 50 years for 20 rupees or less. In a special conversation with Dainik NewsBust India, Dr. Davar shared his inspiring journey…
Was a doctor in the army, took part in the 1971 war
Dr. Davar was born in 1946 in present-day West Pakistan. His father died at the age of one and a half years. With the support of his family, he did his schooling from Jalandhar, Punjab, after which he completed his MBBS degree from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
Dr. Davar told that he was a Permanent Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army. When he appeared for army recruitment, only 23 got selected out of 533 candidates. Of these, the name of Dr. Davar was at number 9.
He was posted in Bangladesh during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Dr. Davar did not know how many injured soldiers were treated. However, after the war was over, he had to take premature retirement due to some health problems. After this he started his practice in Jabalpur from 1972.
Dr. MC Davar started his practice in Jabalpur with a fee of Rs.
Started with 2 rupees and helped lakhs
10 November 1972. This day is very special for Dr. Davar, because on this day he had examined his first patient in Jabalpur. He told- After taking 2 rupees fee till 1986, I started taking 3 rupees. 5 rupees in 1997 and then after 15 years due to financial problems, the fee was increased to 10 rupees in 2012. From November last year, the fee has been reduced to Rs 20.
After all, how does Dr. Davar handle so many expenses in such a fee? The answer lies in his philosophy of ‘simple living, high thinking’. The tables, chairs and hospital beds he bought for his clinic in 1972 are still in use today. Similarly, by saving money, Dr. Davar gave good education to his son and daughter too.
Dr. Davar has been honored with many awards during his practice. These are only parts of it.
The doctor is such that people pray for his health
Dr. Davar treats 150-200 patients daily 6 days a week for the last 50 years. There are some patients who come to them for years when they have any problem. These patients come not only from Jabalpur, but also from far-flung cities. Dr. Davar said- I get a lot of love from people. After kidney failure in 1986, my patients went from Sharda Devi temple in Maihar to Gurudwaras to pray for me. Whatever I am today, I am only because of their prayers.
Dr. Davar says that whatever he is today is because of the prayers of his patients.
Nominated for Padma Bhushan in 2019
Dr. Davar was also nominated for the Padma Bhushan in the year 2019. However, this was not told by him, but by his oldest patient, OP Khare. Khare, 77, retired from the Survey of India, says that Dr. Davar has saved the lives of many patients so far. The way he has been serving the society for the last 50 years, it is not an easy task. He must be honored by the government for this noble work.
