Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has alleged that the Uttar Pradesh Police has wreaked havoc on Azamgarh and Rampur parliamentary seats on the eve of the Lok Sabha bypolls. According to Khan, the UP Police behaved “indecently” with the SP’s Lok Sabha candidate in Rampur on the eve of the Lok Sabha bypolls. Azam Khan said, “I kept awake the whole night. Our Lok Sabha candidates went to Ganj police station, Kotwali police station and Civil Lines police station (in Rampur). The most indecent behavior was done by the inspector at Ganj police station. He was quite agitated. If the polling percentage falls, the fault will be on the administration.”

Azam Khan said, “If the polling percentage falls, then the blame is on the government too. They have wreaked havoc throughout the night. Jeeps playing sirens were everywhere in the city (Rampur); they would take people to the police station and then beat them up. I have also heard about some money transfer. It is shameful.”

“I’m a criminal, I agree… That’s why my city is treated as such. They can do whatever they want, we have to endure. If I want to stay, I have to endure,” Khan said . Significantly, Azam Khan is currently facing several criminal cases.

Azamgarh by-election is being held due to the resignation of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav was elected MLA to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in the elections held earlier this year.

Similarly, Azam Khan had also vacated his Rampur Lok Sabha seat after being elected to the state assembly.

Akhilesh Yadav was elected as MLA from Karhal assembly seat, while Azam Khan was elected from Rampur Sadar constituency of the state.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party contested the elections in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party.
