Mohammad Arif Khan, a resident of Kashmir, will represent the country in two events this time. Arif will compete in Slalom and Giant Slalom. Arif will be only the 16th Indian Olympian to participate in Winter Olympics.
Who is Arif Khan?
31-year-old Arif Khan is a resident of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir. From skiing in the mountains of Gulmarg valley to qualifying for the Beijing Olympics, it has not been easy for him. Arif has participated in more than 127 International Championships. Last year in 2021, Arif had won a ticket to Beijing in the Entry League competition held in Dubai.
Arif Khan was fond of skiing since childhood. His father Yasin Khan used to teach him skiing. Arif’s father used to ski on the slopes of Gulmarg and only then Arif adopted skis. Arif is also associated with tourism and teaches skiing to tourists.
Couldn’t qualify in 2018
In the year 2018, Arif could not make it to the Pyong Chang Winter Olympics due to lack of money. Arif had to go to Switzerland for training, but could not do so due to lack of Rs 1.5 lakh. Most of the income of Arif’s family comes from tourism in Gulmarg. He could not raise much money for training and travel and could not be a part of the Olympics.
